JMC Miami Restorative Vitamin D and Colon Cancer
JMC Miami Restorative Medici brings you the most current nutritional research and in that vein, brings you this bit of information from a study out of the University of Oregon. Researchers have described the essential role of Vitamin D, specifically its receptor (VDR) in slowing down the action of a key protein in the carcinogenic transformation process of colon cancer cells.
Beta-Catenin is a protein necessary for the creation and maintenance of epithelial cell layers by regulating cell growth and adhesion between cells. Animals genetically engineered to develop colonic neoplasms, lack the Vitamin D receptor. This allows buildup of the Beta-Catenin in epithelial cells, a crucial step in the development of colon cancer. Vitamin D receptor activation modulates or controls the amount of Beta-Catenin in colon cancer cells thereby slowing the aggressiveness of the cancer.
JMC Miami Vitamin D , JMC Miami Vitamin D and reduced Type 2 Diabetes
JMC Miami Restorative Medicine’s doctors are strong proponents of Vitamin D injections(for those who need them) and supplementation. The benefits of vitamin D supplementation are becoming much better known. Here’s one that could affect many American lives. Vitamin D supplementation may reduce type 2 Diabetes risk by as much as 43%.
A study out of Tufts University by J. Mitri et al, which was a meta analysis of 8 observational cohorts and 11 randomized controlled trials measuring vitamin D and diabetes, found that individuals with consumption of greater than 500 international units(IU) of vitamin D had a 13% reduction in development to type 2 Diabetes. Those who’s levels were measured in blood to be 25 nanograms per milliliter or higher had a 43% lower risk of developing type 2 Diabetes as compared with those with the lowest blood levels. Vitamin D may play a vital role in prevention of type 2 Diabetes.
Stop by or call JMC Restorative Medicine any time to speak to one of our physicians about the benefits of vitamin D and if it may be right for you as an added supplement to your daily intake.
Miami Vitamin D, Vitamin D and Calcium reduce Skin Cancer Risk
Recently, a number of studies have suggested a link between vitamin D levels and loweerr risk of skin cancers. As well, in that calcium plays a role in the body’s conversion of vitamin D to its biologically active form, a growing body of evidence suggests a preventative role relating to cancer, for the combination of vitamin D and calcium. Studies done at Stanford University Medical School looked at 36,282 postmenopausal females who had previously had basal cell or squamous cell cancers which predispose to the most deadly melanoma. They found that those women that received vitamin D and calcium had a 50% reduction in progression to melanoma compared to placebo. Thus, they concluded that there is a promising role for vitamin D and Calcium in prevention of melanoma.
