JMC Restorative Miami Vitamin D and High Cholesterol Treatment
JMC Miami Restorative Medicine always brings you the latest in health and vitamin research. Out of the journal, Medical Hypotheses in October 2011 comes a study from the Jewish Hospital , Cincinnati comparing 68 patients with high cholesterol who had to discontinue treatment secondary to myalgia( muscle pain usually in shoulder, neck area from the statins. Half the patients were treated with vitamin D 50,000 units intramuscularly twice weekly for 3 weeks, then statins were restarted with vitamin D 50,000 units IM weekly as well. Those patients on Vitamin D had marked increases in blood levels with concurrent elimination of myalgia and drops in LDL cholesterol of an average 60 ng/ml.
More studies esp doube blinded ones are needed but it appears that vitamin D supplementation can help reintroduce statins in patients intolerant as well as help further concurrently reduce “bad” cholesterol.
