JMC Miami Restorative Homocysteine levels and Cognitive Impairment in Aging
JMC Miami Restorative Medicine brings you this study from the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry.This study followed patients over the age of 70 with mild cognitive impairment and elevated homocysteine levels who were treated with B Vitamins. It was a double blinded case controlled study that followed homocysteine levels pre and post treatment in patients treated with B vitamins and those that received placebo.
The study showed a significant benefit in those patients receiving B vitamins and reduction in homocysteine levels versus those that didn’t, in terms of progression in memory loss- semantic and episodic,and global cognition. Those that did not receive B vitamins and had elevated homocysteine levels showed a measurably more rapid decline in memory and cognition.
